Abstract

A polarization mode dispersion (PMD) compensator for single-mode optical fibre has been designed. Its operation principle is based on the use of artificial difference of phase velocities of the basic ordinary and extraordinary waves in spiral-wound fibre, stacked tightly, one turn close to another on the dielectric core. The proposed PMD compensator belongs to full fibre optic devices and can be used in high linear paths of single and multichannel fibre optic communication systems with wavelength-division multiplexing and with optical time-division multiplexing; in optical fibre amplifiers, in measurement circuits, etc.
